Nonprofit/Political Associate Attorney

The firm is looking for a lawyer with at least five years of experience practicing in the areas of nonprofit tax-exempt organizations and/or campaign finance law. Representative responsibilities include:

  • Advising on exempt organization tax law, e.g., applications for tax-exempt status, and solving complicated tax problems such as advocacy rules, disclosure and unrelated business taxes;
  • Establishing PACs and counseling nonprofits and candidates on all aspects of federal and state campaign law compliance;
  • Counseling on corporate governance, e.g., establishing nonprofits with multiple tax-exempt structures, and advising on internal processes;
  • Defending nonprofits facing campaign-finance, IRS and governmental investigations;
  • Advising on compliance with lobbying, gift and ethics laws;
  • Drafting contracts and negotiating mergers, cause-related deals, and vendor agreements; and
  • Troubleshooting new projects and programs.

The ideal candidate will have admission to the D.C. Bar or a state bar with reciprocity, excellent academic credentials and writing skills, five years of legal experience working in one or more of the practice areas described above, and a strong commitment to furthering nonprofit and political work. Experience at nonprofit organizations, labor unions, or with political campaigns is highly valued. The successful candidate will also have a collaborative disposition and an ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in various areas of law.

Washington, D.C. area location is preferred. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. The firm offers a generous benefits package.
