Darrin Hurwitz advises nonprofit organizations on a wide range of legal, business, strategic and risk matters, bringing two decades of experience as in-house counsel and executive for advocacy, political, technology and labor organizations.
Darrin’s practice focuses on helping clients find innovative, pragmatic and effective solutions to the array of legal and risk challenges nonprofit organizations face in today’s sensitive political environment. Building on his years counseling nationally known organizations from the inside, Darrin has a sophisticated and practical understanding of campaign finance, lobbying, tax, fundraising, governance and other regulatory issues as well as corporate and transactional matters. He also has hands-on experience developing organizational legal and compliance programs, policies and trainings tailored to the needs and interests of mission-driven organizations seeking to further their advocacy goals.
Most recently Darrin was General Counsel of ActBlue, the political and charitable fundraising platform, where he served as a member of the company’s executive leadership team, its chief legal advisor, and interim people leader. Prior to that he was Staff Counsel for the National Education Association and Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign. Darrin began his career practicing in the political law and government investigations groups at a major law firm in Washington, DC.
Darrin lives in Los Angeles, where he also serves on the board of the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization that works with federal and state government partners to preserve public parklands.
